As a keen kayaker, I asked about 2 years ago was it o.k. to park free of charge at the old boat house beside the water?
I was told it was free there can you please tell me that is still the case? Mr. j.Austin.

Will / Darragh/ Alice,
Thank you for your constructive feedback on the Castle Ward access point on the Strangford Lough Canoe Trail. We have responded to you all individually but thought it also best to post our response here to benefit others.
As per the majority of National Trust properties there is an entrance charge to Castle Ward. We have updated our website to clarify this and apologise for any previous lack of clarity.
We will raise the issue regarding the locked gate with the National Trust property manager at Castle Ward and communicate the response.
Thanks again for your feedback and I hope you continue to enjoy the Strangford Lough Canoe Trail.
Kind Regards, CanoeNI

I don't want to leave a rating because I am in a dichotomy. If you are able to access the trail it is five stars but there is a real and serious possibility that you may not be able to get on to the water. The National Trust do not seem to be supporting this venture. When we arrived with the canoe on the roof I was asked to pay. It was only due to my partner knowing the set up that he asked about access. I would not have as I was following the prescribed route. There was immediately a problem with a locked gate. No one in the National Trust had a key... not even the duty manager. We managed by portaging the canoe quite some distance through the gate and then through mud to the nearest water. If you get onto the water it is fantastic.

To add to Will Aicken's comment about Castle Ward: Even if you do get into the estate (I am an NT member) they are not prepared to unlock the back gate to allow you to get to the access point, and expect you to portage from the farmyard car park. Really the Canoe Trail sign should be removed from the front gate of the estate as it is completely misleading. Having said that, Castle Ward bay is absolutely beautiful.

Tried to get access to Strangford Lough Canoe trail at the Castle Ward pt, but when I turned up, was told I had to pay the NT entry fee for the estate! I explained that I only wanted to gain access to the Lough canoe trail, but was repeatedly told I had to pay, so left to get in at another location. Is this to be expected with the Castle Ward access pt? It's not mentioned anywhere in the guide.
