Location
The Bothy is located on Salt Island on Strangford Lough just south of Killyleagh. It is a bunkhouse which provides basic accommodation for canoeists and was restored in June 2008.
Facilities
The Bothy accommodates 12 people and offers running water, toilets, a wood burning stove, kitchen area with sink but no cooker, two outdoor BBQs, table and chairs. Users must bring their own wood to the island for the stove and any means of cooking.
Booking and Charges
All bookings for the Bothy are coordinated through the National Trust via the Castle Ward Reception on 028 4488 1204. The charges, which must be paid in full before key collection are as follows:
| Bothy |
£6 per person per night OR £50 for exclusive use |
| Camping at the Bothy site |
£6 per person per night |
| There is no charge for camping at North Bay (on the north side of the island). |
Camping is permitted anywhere on the north side of the island. There is not an actual marked site, however most people camp at either Brandy Bay (J528 502) or further north at J530 504.
The simple trench toilet is at this northern end behind a hedge line at J530 504. It is surrounded by a willow hurdle screen.
The water tap is located along the eastern fence line that surrounds the woodland behind the bothy, located next to a water trough. It is roughly J531 502.
Keys
A key is required for the bothy shutters and side door which, after booking and payment, can be collected within opening hours from one of the following locations:
